In this module’s seminar, Essential Soft Skill Traits, we examined five key qualities shared by effective supervisors. At the top of the list is character. Character defines who you are as a person and shapes whether others will respect you, trust you, and remember you for your authentic actions and values.
To illustrate this point, consider the following exercise:
Part 1
Answer these questions as quickly as you can:
- Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
- Name the last five World Cup winners.
- Name the last five Miss Universe winners.
- Name five people who have received a Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
- Name the last six Academy Award winners for Best Actor or Actress.
- Name all past presidents of your country.
Part 2
Now try these:
- Name three teachers who made a lasting impact on your education.
- Name three friends who supported you during difficult times.
- Name five people who have taught you something valuable.
- Name five people who made you feel appreciated and respected.
- Name five people you genuinely enjoy spending time with.
Most people find the second set of questions much easier. This illustrates an important truth: awards, titles, and wealth may fade from memory, but the impact of character—how someone treats others and lives their values—endures.
Discussion Question: Reflect on this activity and connect it to your role as a future hospitality supervisor. Read the following questions, pick one and use the space below to answer.
- How does character influence your ability to lead effectively, especially in an industry centered on service and people?
- In what ways might strong character traits help you become an “a ha!” supervisor—one who makes a memorable and positive difference in the workplace?
- Share a personal example (from work, school, or life) where someone’s character left a lasting impression on you. What leadership lesson can you take from that experience?
